DRAMA AND STORYTELLING RESOURCES FOR ENGLISH TEACHERS. PLAY OUTLINE.
Title.
“The Devil. The Demon Cat” by Lady Wilde.
Level descriptor.
The following play outline is intended to be worked with students at Level 3, more specifically with a group of five students at 1st Secondary Education (Sección).
Synopsis.
It´s the story of a couple who earns their living with fish. Every day, the fisherman gets home with loads of fish. However, they have troubles with an evil cat which devours all their fish. Although the owner of the house and some friends try to punish severely the malevolent animal, they find it impossible to defeat it. Eventually, there is a young girl who suspects that animal is not from this world and that there is something from the devil in it. So, taking some holy water, she finally succeeds in defeating the demon cat.
Character descriptions and objectives.
1. Fisherman: he fishes and brings fish home every day.
2. Fisherman´s wife: housewife, in charge of sorting fish to sell at market. She will try to solve out a trouble she has with a cat which eats up all their fish.
3. A young girl: works at market sorting fish. She´ll find out that the cat belongs to hell and with the help of holy water, will eventually defeat the evil animal.
4. A man: he just passes by and tries to help women to defeat the animal but unluckily gets badly hurt by the cat.
5. The cat: an evil animal, coming from hell, which devours fisherman´s fish. It growls, attacks, beats everyone who gets near him. It will be finally beaten with holy water.
Scenes.
Scene 1: fisherman´s couple with loads of fish. At night, fish disappear eaten by a cat.
Scene 2: fisherman´s wife and another woman wait for the cat to punish it. The cat, savagely attacks them. Hearing the two women cry, a passerby tries unsuccessfully to help them.
Scene 3: the cat enjoys eating out all the fish. The two women gave the cat several blows using tongs and sticks but it´s useless.
Scene 4: convinced that this animal is not an ordinary one, a young woman decides to use holy water to kill it. When she pours it into him, the cat starts burning and disappears for ever.
